TTURCs talk policy: Lessons learned

Consensus that cross-fertilization of disciplines would speed
progress in reducing the toll from tobacco use led to the Transdisciplinary
Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC) initiative. To this assembly
of diverse researchers was then added funding for TTURC Partners
that expanded the boundaries to include policy research: how
to transfer findings into life-saving programs, influence businesses
to adopt policies out of self-interest, collaborate with stakeholders,
and evaluate policies themselves.
Kobus and Mermelstein (p. 467) reviewed the efforts of the six TTURCs that engaged in such policy-research partnerships to determine what strategies worked best. Their recommendations for future efforts:
- Allow ample time for "listening across the gulf." The start-up should provide opportunities for team-building and pilot or feasibility studies.
- Involve senior policy researchers as central members of the team, not merely as consultants.
